About Dr Akalya Mahendran

Dr Akalya Mahendran

Dr Akalya Mahendran is passionate about holistic patient focused care. Akalya is a Fellow with the Royal Australiasian College of Physicians. She completed her Gastroenterology and Hepatology training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospitals in Sydney. 

She completed her Bachelor of Medical Studies and Doctorate of Medicine at the University of New Wales. To further her commitment to public health she undertook a Masters of Medicine at the University of Sydney in Clinical Epidemiology.

Akalya has a subspecialty interest in inflammatory bowel disease and women’s health. She has a public hospital appointment at Bankstown Hospital as a Visiting Medical Officer. She has a keen interest improving health literacy and access to health care in culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Akalya is happy to provide care in general gastroenterology conditions, inflammatory bowel disease, liver conditions, collaborative bowel cancer care and functional gut disorders. 

 

Akalya is the Founder of Sydney Gastroenterology Collective (SGE Collective). SGE Collective is a collegial modern speciality service which prides itself on high quality evidence based care, accessibility and kindness. Akalya is a Councillor with the Australian Medical Association NSW where she is committed to ongoing advocacy for her patients and community.

Akalya sees patients in Glebe and Strathfield, and can provide diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic services at Sydney Day Surgery (RPA Medical Centre), Strathfield Private Hospital and Bankstown Hospital.

When she’s not championing her patients, she’s spending time with her young family, listening to history podcasts and exploring what’s new on Broadsheet Sydney!
